Portugal Nationality and Residence: Check the Official Rules
By Immigrid Team ·
Correction, October 16, 2026: An earlier version incorrectly presented a six-year nationality threshold, a change from B1 to A2 as a higher language standard, real estate as a current qualifying investment route, and unsupported income, integration and interview requirements. Those statements have been withdrawn.
Nationality: use the official route for your circumstances
The Portuguese Ministry of Justice's current residence-based nationality page describes a route for adults with at least ten years of legal residence. It also lists Portuguese-language knowledge and criminal and security conditions. Other nationality profiles have different rules. Check the appropriate official profile and any applicable transitional provisions before relying on a residence period.
Language evidence is a separate check
The Ministry lists accepted forms of language evidence and exceptions. This article does not claim that an A2/B1 rule changed in 2026. It also does not treat permanent residence and nationality as the same application.
Investment residence does not mean any property purchase qualifies
AIMA's official investment-residence documentation states that the investment activity cannot be directed, directly or indirectly, into real estate. AIMA describes specific qualifying routes; buying a home should not be treated as a current Golden Visa eligibility shortcut.
Before acting
Read the current official instructions for the exact route you intend to use. Where guidance or dates appear inconsistent, seek clarification from the authority or a qualified professional rather than relying on this summary.
